Turin, or Torino as it is known in Italy, has a lot to offer, so it’s a perfect destination for a day-trip if you’re staying in Milan. There’s so much to see and do in Turin that you may even want to break up your Milan holiday by spending a few days there. It will take you just under two hours to drive to Turin in your Milan hire car. If you like winter sports, you’ll love Turin. You might want to spend a night or two in one of the nearby ski resorts so you can make the most of the skiing and snowboarding facilities.


Turin itself has some lovely cafés and shops, and the Ballôn flea market, held on Saturdays, is well worth a visit. Turin is particularly well known for its many historic buildings and museums, and places to visit include:

  • the Mole Antonelliana at Via Montebello - designed by Alessandro Antonelli, and originally intended as a Jewish temple, this building now houses Turin’s National Museum of Cinema. You can enjoy the interactive exhibits and take the glass elevator to the top of the building for fabulous views of Turin.
    Opening hours: The National Museum of Cinema is open 9am - 8pm, Tuesday - Friday and Sunday, and 9am - 11pm on Saturdays. It’s closed on Mondays.

  • the Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace) - located in Turin’s Piazza Castello, the palace is open to the public. You can see the royal apartments and explore the lovely Royal Gardens, which were designed by Andre Le Notre, who also designed the gardens at the Palace of Versailles.
    Opening hours: The Palazzo Reale is open from 8.30am until 7.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursday – Sunday. It’s open between 8.30am and 10.15pm on Wednesdays. It’s closed on Mondays.

  • the Egyptian Museum at Via Accademia delle Scienze, 6 – this museum has an outstanding collection of Egyptian artefacts on display including the Book of the Dead of Iuefankh, mummies, a basalt statue of the Goddess Hathor, a black Ramses II statue, jewellery and sarcophagi.
    Opening hours: The Egyptian Museum is open Tuesday – Sunday, from 8.30am until 7.30pm in winter and from 9.30am until 8.30pm in summer. It’s closed on Mondays.

  • the Basilica Di Superga - a beautiful 18th century church where several members of royalty are entombed.
    Opening hours: April to October – Monday to Friday, 9am – 12pm and 3pm – 6pm, and Saturdays and Sundays, 9am – 12.45pm and 3pm – 6.45pm. November to March – Monday to Friday, 9am – 12pm and 3pm – 5pm, and Saturdays and Sundays, 9am – 12.45pm and 3pm – 5.45pm.

  • the Museo della Sindone at Via S. Domenico 28 - a fascinating museum under the Baroque Church of the Sacred Shroud. You can learn all about the world famous Shroud of Turin and come to your own conclusions about its origins.
    Opening hours: The museum is open daily from 9am – 12pm and 3pm – 7pm.

  • Parco del Valentino (Valentino Park) – this park, in the centre of Turin, is a perfect place in which to relax. It includes the Borgo Medievale Torino (a reconstructed medieval village) and the Orto Botanico (Botanical Garden), which includes over 4,000 species of plants.
    Opening hours: The different attractions have different opening hours, so check before visiting.

    Directions: To reach Turin from Milan by car, take the A7 partial toll road out of Milan (heading for Genova/Bologna/Torino). Follow this road for just under 64km, and take the exit for the A21/E70 toll road, signposted for Torino. Follow the E70 for about 94km, and take the exit for the SS393. Merge onto the A55, and follow the signs to get to Turin city centre.
